Harry Topping shares how he achieved EngTech with the PWI as a Civil Engineer Degree Apprentice at AtkinsRéalis, combining hands-on experience in track design with part-time study at the University of Salford.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I joined AtkinsRéalis in September 2024 as a Civil Engineer Degree Apprentice, working within Permanent Way Design. Since starting, I’ve had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in track design, contributing to a range of projects whilst studying towards my BEng part-time at the University of Salford.

Why did you want to become professionally registered?

Applying for EngTech registration is a great way to demonstrate the progress I’ve made early in my career and shows that I’m committed to professional development. I won’t be eligible to apply for IEng for a few more years, so EngTech is a great milestone that recognises my experience at this stage.

How did you find the process?

The process was great – the application form was clear and straightforward to complete, and the PWI offers lots of support, such as the Professional Registration Forum, as well as the monthly Professional Registration calls. My Sponsor and Supporter also provided lots of support and guidance which made the whole process really streamlined.

How will EngTech recognition help you in your career?

Being an EngTech enables me to gain a qualification whilst I’m still undertaking my degree and helps to show others that I’m motivated about my career progression. It also puts me in a position to encourage and support others to apply for EngTech registration which encourages professional development within the team.
