Advancing Intelligent Railway Maintenance: Integrated Approaches for Rail and Ballast Inspection

13/03/2025 @ 12:15 - 13:15

Dr. Yunlong Guo, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Research Fellow, University of Birmingham

Birmingham Section online meeting

Ensuring railway track safety and efficiency requires innovative approaches to inspecting and maintaining critical components such as rails and ballast layers. This study integrates advanced non-destructive testing methods, including instrumented trains, 3D imaging, and ground-penetrating radar (GPR), to address key challenges. For rail inspection, a 2D&3D isomorphic imaging system enhances defect detection by fusing texture and depth data, achieving precise measurements and significantly reducing false alarms. Rail corrugation is assessed using wheel-rail interaction forces, providing data-driven grinding strategies for maintenance. Ballast layer evaluation employs advanced GPR signal processing, utilizing electromagnetic wave scattering to accurately assess fouling under diverse field conditions. Track geometry analysis complements this by identifying defects and prioritizing maintenance based on dynamic inspection data. These integrated methods enable efficient and precise identification of rail and ballast defects, advancing intelligent railway maintenance strategies to enhance safety, reduce costs, and extend asset life.
