Thames Valley Section hybrid meeting
This presentation is in two parts and is intended to give track engineers an understanding in the basic concepts underlying rail management.
The first part looks at the metallurgy of plain carbon steels and the effects of carbon content and heat treating. There is a brief look at the effects of alloying and a case study of how it can go wrong!
The second section looks at how the section shape and manufacturing affects rail stress and the growth of rail defects. There is a reminder on basic section properties and bending theory.
There are things to do so you may wish to bring a sheet of A4 paper and your calculator!
