Electrification Between Wigan and Bolton

January 13 @ 15:30 - 17:00

Mark Cowgill, Senior Project Manager and Simon Skinner, Engineering Director, SPL Powerlines

Lancaster, Barrow and Carlisle Section in-person meeting

This presentation will provide an account of the involvement of SPL Powerlines in the £100 million scheme to electrify 6.5 route miles between Wigan and Bolton, exploring both technical and collaborative aspects. It will include an explanation of the rationale behind the electrification of this key section of the railway and an outline of the scope of works, together with project requirements. The complexities of project set-up will be explained, including the contractual framework and the collaborative approaches adopted to overcome challenges.

The presentation will also examine the robust quality assurance processes that underpinned delivery and the critical steps leading to successful system entry into service. A unique perspective will be shared on the events of New Year’s Eve, when the theft of a feeder cable close to the opening date had to be overcome, underlining the resilience and adaptability of the teams involved. The lessons learned during the project will also be highlighted.
