The Network Rail Integrated Composite Sleeper Project (The Hedgehog), in conjunction with Lankhorst Engineering Products, is a Network Rail R&D funded project. The aim of the project is to create a composite sleeper with integrated Fastclip fastening systems, instead of using drilled base plates, which is the current offering for composite sleepers. This change aims to reduce the embedded carbon associated with cast base plates and make the sleeper better suited to mechanised track renewals.
Nick Matthews, the Programme Engineering Manager leading the project, will present on the design choices and first-of-type testing that has led to the world’s first integrated composite sleeper made out of recycled bottle tops!
