Synopsis: Metro Flow – how we introduced a freight train to a Metro system.
How Nexus developed the Metro Flow track dualling scheme between Pelaw and Bede. Focusing on the development, design and tender stages of the project and the infrastructure challenges of introducing a freight train to the Tyne and Wear Metro System. (A further presentation is promised next year covering the construction and commissioning works).
The Metro Flow project sees the existing freight line in South Tyneside upgraded and electrified from December 2022, making it capable of carrying Metro passenger services. This has the potential to boost the capacity by up to 24,000 extra passenger journeys every day. Three sections of single-track totalling five kilometres have been doubled between Pelaw and Bede Metro stations. This project is right on your doorstep, and certainly one not to be missed! An exciting learning experience that will go down in history as a milestone project in the development and expansion of the much-envied Tyne and Wear Metro system.
