Rolling contact fatigue: A wheel and rail perspective
22/09/2022 @ 16:30 - 18:30

Dr Mark Burstow, Principal Vehicle Track Dynamic Engineer, Technical Authority, Network Rail
Milton Keynes Section in-person meeting
Synopsis: Rolling contact fatigue (RCF) is often perceived as a problem for the infrastructure manager and managed through inspection, grinding and milling. However, it is also a problem for the train operator and maintainer, shortening wheelset life. This presentation will review some recent work to predict the occurrence of RCF on wheels and to show train design can be (and is being) influenced to reduce the amount of RCF caused to both the track and the wheel: reducing costs for both infrastructure manager and train operator.
Meeting in-person from 16:30 for refreshments courtesy of the PWI for a prompt 17:00 start.
