Basic steel metallurgy and the effect of rail section on rail stress and defect growth

Synopsis: The presentation is in two parts. In the first we will look at phases and crystalline structures, the Iron-Iron Carbide Equilibrium Diagram, the effect of carbon content on steel properties, what happens when steel is heated and why it is important to control this. In the second part we will look at rail sections and their properties, the effect of shape on structural properties, the bending of beams, residual stresses and defect growth and critical defect size.

Meeting in-person from 17:00 for a 17:30 start. Light refreshments available.
