Hello. My name is Stuart Murphy and I am delighted to have taken up a Technical Manager position at The PWI. I am a Chartered Engineer and have spent around 20 years in both the Electricity and Railway industries.
I have been a volunteer with The PWI for many years and I have also enjoyed the privilege of being a part of The PWI Membership Committee for a number of years too. Consequently, I am really looking forward to meeting some familiar, as well as, many new faces as I progress in my new role.

Some of the initiatives I will be getting involved with will include The PWI Technical Committee (comprising of our corporate members), Heritage Railways and the Climate Change Adaptation & Decarbonisation Committee. I am looking forward to helping The PWI develop these areas.
I will also be a part of The PWI team attending Rail Live on 22nd June, so if you see me on The PWI stand, please feel free to come and say hello!

Joss Apps
My name is Joss and have recently been appointed as a Technical Manager at The PWI. I’ve been working in the rail industry for over 30 years and joined The PWI Nottingham and Derby section early in my career as a young engineer who was starting out and keen to learn from industry leaders.
During my career I’ve learnt a huge amount about railway infrastructure including a detailed understanding in the key areas of regulation, assurance, safety, research, design, and standards development. It’s time for me to share some of what I’ve picked up along the way and I very much welcome the opportunity to do this.
My role is one of several within the technical team led by our Technical Director Brian. There’s always much to learn and I look forward to hearing about new developments and then sharing them in our technical publication The Journal.
I’m very happy to receive technical queries from those in our industry, remember there’s no such thing as a stupid question, so please do reach out and message me.
Another role I look forward to is supporting individuals to gain recognition for their contributions to the industry through professional development, personally, I find this very rewarding.
Beyond my role at The PWI, I manage the provision of rowing-related sports resources including a boathouse and transportation of equipment, hence the rather colourful blazer!
