Oliver’s Professional Registration Journey to Incorporated Engineer

Name: Oliver Lawrence

Role: Maintenance Specialist | Rail Systems Engineer

Company: Network Rail

Level of Professional Registration: IEng

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m a railway professional with over 16 years experience in the industry, starting my career as an apprentice and progressing through various roles in the industry. My journey has given me hands-on experience across different areas of railway engineering, which I’ve complemented with academic knowledge, recently completing a BEng (Hons) in Rail and Rail Systems Engineering. I currently work in a consulting role, specialising in maintenance and system integration, and I’m always looking for ways to apply my expertise to improve railway engineering.

Why did you want to become professionally registered?

Becoming professionally registered was an important step in validating my experience and technical competence. Having worked in the rail industry for over a decade, I wanted my knowledge and skills to be formally recognised, not just through experience but also through an independent benchmark like IEng.

It demonstrates my commitment to professionalism and ongoing development, as well as reinforcing my credibility in the field.

How did you find the process?

The process was challenging but rewarding. Documenting my experience and aligning it with the IEng competences required a lot of reflection, but it also highlighted how much I’ve achieved throughout my career. My academic studies, particularly my BEng (Hons), played a key role in bridging the gap between practical experience and theoretical knowledge.

The support from the PWI was also invaluable in guiding me through the registration process.

How do you consider being recognised with IEng status will help you in your career?

Gaining IEng status provides a formal recognition of my skills and experience, which strengthens my professional standing. It not only enhances my credibility but also opens doors to more opportunities. It reinforces my commitment to professional development, ensuring I stay at the forefront of industry advancements whilst contributing to the wider engineering community.

Thanks, Oliver, for sharing your journey and choosing to pursue Professional Registration with us.
