Embedding sustainability into the railway – Jamie Wilkes, Technical Authority Team, Network Rail
Wessex, Croydon & Brighton sections
Synopsis: Over the course of the last 6 years, Network Rail has been progressively introducing sustainable alternatives to wood. Whilst the legislative ban on the use of creosote preservatives was one of the primary drivers, increased sustainability, lower environmental impact and circular economy have all been key drivers pushing the industry towards change. So far, Network Rail has integrated this into the use of longitudinal bearer systems and track sleepers, with switch and crossing bearers soon to follow (some may already be aware of their use at Newark Flat Crossing).
This presentation will discuss the differing types of materials in use, including their advantages and limitations. The development of the products and the extent of their use so far on Network Rail’s infrastructure will also be considered. The presentation will also discuss the lessons learned in the approval process, and how we are incorporating the change in material into our existing Standards framework (including maintenance, inspection, and replacement requirements), to ensure our front-line workers are properly equipped to manage the new materials.
