The Dartmoor Line – Restoring your railway
13/07/2022 @ 12:30 - 14:00

Dan Parkes, Programme Manager- Capital Delivery Building & Civils & Mark Howells, Senior Asset Engineer (Drainage & Lineside), Network Rail
West of England Section Hybrid meeting
Synopsis: The re-opening of the Okehampton to Exeter ‘Dartmoor Line’ in Nov 2021 was the first of the Government’s ‘Restoring your Railway’ schemes, showcasing what can be achieved when the Rail industry, Government and local partners work collaboratively with a single, dedicated focus. The collective approach throughout has been one of transparency, sharing the challenges and resolutions, to ultimately enable successful project delivery.
The re-building of the line applied Project SPEED principles to deliver the project within 9 months’ receipt of funding, opened 21 months ahead of programme and more than £10m under budget. This included delivering 11 miles of new track and installing 24,000 concrete sleepers and 29,000 tonnes of ballast in a record-breaking 20-day period.
This talk will have perspectives from inside the Project, Delivery & Asset Management teams and will cover the immense benefits of ‘challenging the norm’, as well as some of the hurdles that were overcome.
Meeting in person from 12:15 with light refreshments courtesy of the PWI for a prompt 12:45 start.
