Battery trains and fast charging: How it all works
16/05/2024 @ 17:00 - 18:30

Julian Fletcher, Technology Development Manager, Great Western Railway
Birmingham Section in person meeting
*BRAND NEW VENUE* – meeting at 17:00 for a 17:15 start
Synopsis: Great Western Railways are trialing a “fast charging” battery train on a branch line in London. It will replace a diesel train, keep to the same timetable and charge in just over 3 minutes. Find out how and why this is possible.
Presenter: Julian Fletcher is a pioneering engineer with experience working on battery train projects for several years; In 2020, he decided to leave the aerospace industry, where he had spent over 20 years at the cutting edge of gas turbine development. He is now at the engineering heart of the UK’s battery train industry, working on the final stages of demonstrating fast charging technology. This enables battery trains to have practically limitless range. As well as passenger trains, he’s worked on locomotive and track maintenance vehicle conversions. He is passionate about engineering, has a family, two rabbits, two EVs and a lot of insulation.
