The presentation will provide details of ongoing research being conducted with more than 30 senior rail industry figures with experience in leadership positions delivering complex multidisciplinary rail projects across the world. The concerns they highlighted regarding the relationship between designers and contractors include misaligned objectives, lack of trust, deteriorating levels of capability and conflict that can be described using social identity theory. They also provide hope by highlighting successful projects that have had a clear guiding mind for technical decision making, approaches that reduced conflict, aligned objectives and used modern technology to achieve successful outcomes.
