Elastic Solutions for Railway Structures

Synopsis: The presentation will demonstrate how elastic solution products can protect permanent way infrastructure. The main vehicles for these improvements are under-sleeper pads, under-ballast mats and mass spring systems, which collectively can protect the track structure, extend its lifetime and lower annual maintenance requirements, and examples are given of application of these products to rail links such as the Krakow airport link in Poland and the Daqin coal railway in North China, which exhibits some of the heaviest tonnages (highest MGT) in the world. The mitigation of noise and vibration in other affected structures will also be covered, with beneficial applications including a concert hall in Munich which is located in the immediate vicinity of a tunnel on the S-Bahn network. A review is also provided of the current level of application of these products to Network Rail by route.
