Haymarket North and South Tunnels 2013 to 2016: A Reflection – Angus MacGregor, Registered Ground Engineering Professional, BAM UK & Ireland

Synopsis: To allow development of the former Caledonian Railway Morrison Street Goods Yard, Edinburgh a significant stabilisation project was undertaken in the main line tunnels running below. The works being described in the presentation comprised a variety of tunnel lining repairs, brick lining stitching and interstitial and annular grouting of both Haymarket North and South Tunnels. Throughout the works both tunnels were maintained fully operational for the main Edinburgh to Glasgow railway lines. Works were conducted in track possessions (and electrical isolations) with tunnels handed back to train movements each morning following nightshift works. Angus provides an insight to the challenges of altering the equilibrium of our tunnel assets.
