Operational principles of tamping machines

Andy will commence with explaining how lateral and vertical track geometry defects are traditionally measured using the tamping machines themselves, and how the remedial action necessary is then calculated and delivered. He will then explain how more accurate and durable outputs were achieved through development of ‘intelligent’ tamping and lining techniques such as Design Overlift and Automatic Line and Level Control (ALC). Finally, Andy will provide an insight into some of the most recent technological developments that have been incorporated into the latest generation of tamping machines. This presentation will be wide-ranging and will be of interest not only to early-career members, but also to more experienced members who may be keen to understand how track maintenance engineers are continuing to capitalise on developments in the field.
Andy has over 30 years experience managing and leading railway plant fleets on infrastructure maintenance, renewal and construction projects. He has held multiple roles managing different lifecycle stages of On-track Machines and On-track Plant (OTM/OTP), from tendering, procurement, manufacture, test & commissioning and introduction into service.
