Operational Principles of Tamping Machines

Andy will explain the basic operational principles of a tamping machine and how a tamper measures lateral and vertical railway track geometry. After the in depth explanation of the tampers functions, Andy will provide an insight into some of the most recent technological developments that have been incorporated into the latest generation of tamping machines.
This presentation will be wide-ranging and will be of special interest to early-career members, but also to more experienced members who may be keen to understand how track maintenance engineers are continuing to capitalise on developments in the field.
Andy has over 37 years experience managing and leading railway plant fleets on infrastructure maintenance, renewals and construction projects. He has held multiple roles managing different lifecycle stages of various On-track Machines and On-track Plant (OTM/OTP), from tendering, procurement, manufacture, fleet management, overhauls, testing & commissioning and introduction into service.
