Overhead Line Electrification
08/03/2022 @ 16:00 - 18:00

Peter Dearman, Dearman Engineering & PWI Deputy President
Lancaster, Barrow and Carlisle Section meeting
Meeting in-person from 16:00 for a 16:30 start
Synopsis: Peter Dearman, who has been involved with railway electrification in the UK throughout his career, explains the place of railway electrification in the context of the 21st Century. From the starting point of a historical review of both overhead and conductor rail systems he goes on to review the delivery of schemes proposed in the 1955 Modernisation Plan (including West Coast Main Line) and 1977 Electrification Plan (including East Coast Main Line), before focusing on the current progress of Network Rail’s own 2010 National Electrification Plan.
There is a particular focus on Network Rail’s response to climate change, which takes the form of the Traction Decarbonisation Network Strategy. This proposes a near doubling of total electrified route mileage in the UK, and the associated costs of the strategy are examined.
