Rail trackbed research at the University of Southampton
20/02/2024 @ 12:30 - 13:30

Prof William Powrie, University of Southampton
PWI Lunch & Learn
Synopsis: The talk will summarise some recent and current research at the University of Southampton on railway trackbeds. William will talk about the results of research on quantifying and predicting track settlement, the role of track (support) stiffness, and targeted remediation of localised defects. It will then discuss current projects addressing topics including the performance of complex crossings, relating on-train to track-side measurement data, performance of plain line following trackbed renewal, transitions onto and off underbridges, improving the lateral resistance of sleepers to prevent track buckling, and performance of re-used ballast. Offers of contributions to ongoing projects and suggestions for future work will be most welcome.
