Resurrecting Railways: Lessons from two Scottish projects

Synopsis: A number of closed rail routes have been reopened in Scotland in recent years. Peter Heubeck focuses on the two largest projects completed to date, highlighting the best practices which were achieved during their reinstatement and also lessons which were learned. The Airdrie to Bathgate reopening has plugged a gap between two existing passenger services to provide an additional electrified route between Glasgow and Edinburgh, while the reopened Borders Railway between Edinburgh Waverley and Tweedbank has re-established a diesel service on the former Waverley Route between Edinburgh and Carlisle. Peter also reviews the prospects for further extension of the Borders Railway south of Tweedbank to Hawick and beyond.
