Synopsis: Peter Heubeck played a leading role in organising the supply of permanent way materials during his service with Railtrack and Network Rail, which included modernising the provision of engineering trains so that they operated in a centralised manner. In this presentation he considers the factors affecting the supply of each commodity – ballast, rail, sleepers and S & C – in turn, and looks at the benefits of centralisation, reviewing the problems encountered in doing so. The supply of materials for the HS2 project is included, as also observations on how the supply chain serves the local area of Lancashire and Cumbria.
