Discontinuous Electrification: The case for and against

The presentation sets out the reasons why full electrification is not now favoured, and the effect that has on the enthusiasm for other novel forms of traction. Over the last decades multi-mode trains integrating batteries and diesel engines into EMU vehicles has become commonplace. This has in turn opened the possibility for increase in the mileage of services operated by electric traction, without the need for full fixed electrification.
Discontinuous electrification is possible; Cardiff Valley Lines are rightly celebrated as a very successful and encouraging example. There is a swell of enthusiasm within the industry to adopt discontinuous electrification widely; the presentation explains the engineering of a discontinuous electrification and why this may not save as much cost as might be imagined.
