Petteril Bridge derailment – reactive recovery works
24/10/2023 @ 16:30 - 18:00

Mark Evans, Senior Programme Manager – Civils, Network Rail
Lancaster, Barrow & Carlisle Section in-person meeting
Synopsis: At 20:03 on 19th October 2022 the 17:15 Clitheroe to Carlisle Yard freight service derailed at Petteril Bridge Junction to the east of Carlisle railway station, where the lines from Newcastle and Settle converge. The freight train involved was formed of a Class 66 locomotive and 14 loaded cement wagons, and five of these wagons derailed. One of the derailed wagons subsequently entered the River Petteril. The derailment caused significant damage to an underbridge structure, which required emergency works to allow the line to reopen to traffic. In this presentation Mark Evans, Senior Programme Manager (Civils), will cover the site constraints and key challenges involved in restoring the line to traffic, the reactive recovery operation by Network Rail’s internal delivery team and the additional works undertaken to structures and geotechnical assets facilitated by the temporary suspension of services.
Meeting in-person from 16:00 for a 16:30 start
